Aquatic microbial ecology and biological oceanography; functioning of microbial/planktonic systems - particularly, roles of  bacteria, archaea, and viruses in food webs; microbial biodiversity and identification of nonculturable bacteria and archaea; interactions with dissolved and particulate organic matter; two-way interactions with other chemical and physical processes; rates of bactivory and viral infection; rates of nutrient regeneration;  application of biochemical and molecular biological approaches to these problems; connections to global cycles; human impacts on aquatic systems and related health hazards.
